Thousands attend Global Village opening
15 Oct 2013 The Global Village opened its gates to visitors on Saturday with its tradition of funfare, excitement, and entertainment to mark its 18th season this year. Entry to the theme park on its opening day was free which was welcomed by some 2,000 visitors as of 6pm on Saturday. More visitors were expected to come to the theme park as the night progressed. The season, which will run for 148 days, opened a few days shy of the Eid Al Adha holidays to make way for tens of thousands of visitors from the UAE and across the region. Opening hours will be extended until 2am from October 10 to 19 and until 3am on October 14 and 15. Entry ticket is Dh15 this year, from Dh10 last year. Children under three years of age, people with special needs and their companion, and people over 65 years old, however, may visit free of charge. This year, European countries such as Germany, Italy, and France have joined the long list of country pavilions at Global Village making the theme park ever more global. Organisers promised new additions to the ever growing park including the Fantasy Island Funfair concept, which has been brought to the Middle East for the first time by UK operator the Mellors Group. The island will feature 36 rides and skill games with instant rewards. As per tradition, Global Village’s programmes for this season are specially themed and created for children’s entertainment. This will feature a number of attractions, namely, the Moshi Monster and Fairy Tales on Ice featuring Aladdin, Snow White and Pinocchio, among others. In addition to the pavilions and new national representations, visitors can sample a colourful and truly international selection of handmade goods, artifacts and tasty goodies from 170 kiosks at Global Village adding colour and vibrancy to the event. Visitors who feel lucky may participate in this season’s 16 weekly draws to give them the chance to win a new Audi A4. The first draw will begin on October 10 and will be held on a weekly basis until the end of the park’s operational season except during the Dubai Shopping Festival (DSF) period. During DSF, Global Village will conduct an exclusive draw during the 32-day festival. The draws will be made on weekends and visitors can get a chance to win exciting prizes by using their entry tickets bought at the gate. Source: Gulf News
